Sony is pushing 3D pretty hard. And why wouldn’t they? They sell the game system, the television, and the glasses! The consumer response has definitely been a mixed one, with such a pricey buy in. But Sony has come up with a cool new idea that I honestly find more appealing than just 3D: multi user 3D.
3D television works by flickering back and forth between two images very rapidly; one for each eye. The glasses then black out each eye in rapid succession so that you perceive 3D. This happens about 240 times per second, which is why 3D TVs require that high refresh rate.
Sony thought,” if we can send two separate images to two eyes, why not two different users?” The idea has merit. You could play split screen multiplayer without actually having to split the screen. Sony has even proposed both views being in 3D.
The patents were filed about a year ago, but are just now coming to light. As 3D TVs become more common, we will see if this technology ever makes it off the drawing board. Personally, I really hope it does.
