Sony Wants 3D Gaming Kept To 720p On The PlayStation 3 - MTV Multiplayer

Sony 3-D games

3D was a big part of the Sony E3 presentation this year, and "Killzone 3" will be at the front of the pack as far as titles they'll use to sell the PlayStation 3's display capabilities. Going forward, though, Sony wants developers to be careful with their resolution choices and are thus limiting everyone to 720p for 3D in their official recommendations.
Games running natively at 1080p are even being scaled down in 3D mode, according to a Joystiqreport citing SCE senior development manager Simon Benson, who spoke at the Develop conference this week. Though 3D movies in 1080p are perfectly acceptable and the PS3 can handle them, Benson explained, frame rates on games can suffer at 1080p 3D, forcing users to experience gameplay at less than the 60 frames per second that are possible at 720p.
For those with exceptionally high standards for graphics resolution, this news may come as a disappointment, but if you're watching a game in 720p in 3D, chances are that you're still going to be a few leaps ahead of your neighbors in terms of your home entertainment setup.
